Memberships for Square Appointments

Square can bill a client every month. What it doesn’t document is a way for that subscription to give members their price, or their included facial, when they book online. Here is what Square does today, what sellers use instead, and how Foyer runs memberships on top of Square Subscriptions.

Short answer

Square Subscriptions turns an item into a recurring charge, with no monthly fee. Square documents no native way for a subscription to apply member pricing or appointment credits at online booking, so most sellers track members in a spreadsheet or use an add-on. Foyer creates the plan in Square Subscriptions and applies the member’s price and monthly credits when they book.

  • Billing, receipts and failed payments stay in Square
  • Member percent off, plus up to five included services a month
  • Members confirm by email code before perks apply

What Square Subscriptions does today

Square Subscriptions turns any item in your library into a recurring subscription, with optional “subscribe and save” discounts, pausing and end dates. Customers get a link to update their card, pause or cancel. Square says “there are no monthly fees or fixed costs for Square Subscriptions.”

  1. Create the plan. Items & services > Subscription plans > Create plan.
  2. Assign items and a frequency. Add the item, a billing frequency, and any discount, end date or pause option.
  3. Sell it. Through Square Online, a QR code or social media, or create one by hand under Orders & payments > Subscriptions.

Selling subscriptions on a Square Online website is part of Square Plus and Premium. Subscriptions are managed from the Dashboard and the iOS app.

Where it stops for appointment businesses

A spa membership is more than a monthly charge. Members expect their price and their included service to just work when they book. Square’s help center doesn’t describe any way for a subscription to grant appointment credits or member pricing on services, and a December 2025 feature request for “Monthly Memberships for Services” got replies from third-party apps, not from Square.

“I’d like the ability to add the discount code directly to the customer so when they checkout online or instore they automatically get their member pricing. Right now I use a spreadsheet.”

The closest native option is packages: prepaid sessions on Square Plus. Packages are a one-time purchase, not a monthly plan.

How memberships work in Foyer

  • Billing is Square’s. Foyer creates the plan as a monthly Square subscription. Joining saves the card in Square and starts a real Square subscription, so receipts and failed payments work as they do today.
  • Perks at booking. A member percent off all services or chosen groups, and up to five included services a month, booked at $0. Credits reset each calendar month in your time zone.
  • Members prove it’s them. A six-digit email code unlocks member prices, so a shared name or email can’t borrow perks.
  • Status follows Square. When a subscription is paused or canceled in Square, member perks stop.
  • Join from your site. A “Become a member” option in the booking widget and on your Foyer Page.

Discounts stack in one fixed order: a package session first, then membership credits, then the member percent, then a promo code on what is left.

How to price a spa or med spa membership

Most successful memberships pay for themselves with one visit a month and reward a second one:

PlanMonthly priceWhat members get
Facial club$99One signature facial a month, 10% off everything else
Tox membership$75Banked monthly credit toward tox, member price per unit
Lash fill club$65Two fills a month at the member rate

Start from your most-booked service: price the membership a little under its single-visit price, include one session, and add a percent off so members book more. If a client has visited three times in 90 days, the membership usually saves them money. That is who to invite first.

Questions Square sellers ask

Can you do memberships on Square?

Square Subscriptions bills customers monthly for an item, with no extra fee. Square doesn’t document a way to give members appointment credits or member prices at online booking, so businesses add that with an app like Foyer.

How do I set up a subscription in Square?

In the Square Dashboard go to Items & services > Subscription plans > Create plan, assign items, add a frequency option and any discount or end date, and save. Customers can then subscribe online or you can create a subscription for them.

Does Square Subscriptions cost extra?

Square says there are no monthly fees or fixed costs for Square Subscriptions; you pay normal card processing. Selling subscriptions on a Square Online website needs Square Plus or Premium.

Can members book their included service online for free?

With Foyer, yes. A member confirms their email with a code, and their monthly credit books the included service at $0. Square’s own booking site has no documented way to do this.

What happens if a member’s card fails?

Billing runs through Square Subscriptions, so Square handles the failed payment. When the subscription is no longer active, Foyer stops applying member perks.
