Promo codes and referrals for Square Appointments

Square lets you create coupons and discounts, but clients can’t type a code when they book online. Here is what Square offers, the workarounds sellers use, and how Foyer adds promo codes and a referral program to booking.

Short answer

Square’s online booking site has no promo code field. Square coupons are redeemed when you check the client out, and a May 2026 feature request asks for codes at online checkout. Foyer adds a code field to booking, with limits and expiry, plus a referral program that rewards clients after their friend’s visit.

  • Percent or dollar codes, limited to chosen services
  • First-visit-only codes checked against Square
  • Referral rewards paid only after the friend’s visit

What Square offers for discounts today

  • Discounts at checkout on every plan, applied by your team.
  • Coupons on every plan, to share across marketing, redeemed when you check the client out.
  • Coupons on Square Online for store orders, not appointment bookings.

None of these lets a client enter a code while booking. A May 2026 feature request on the Square Seller Community says codes can be created in Square Marketing and Square Online but there is “no way for customers to enter these codes” when they book.

“There is no option for them to enter the code during checkout online.”

Earlier requests for discount codes at online booking have 116,948 views across two threads.

Workarounds Square sellers use

  • Ask for the code in booking notes and apply it at checkout. Works, but the client sees full price when booking.
  • A hidden discounted service shared through an advanced widget link. Every promo becomes another service to manage.
  • A payment link that accepts coupons, separate from the booking.

Each one moves the discount out of the moment the client decides, which is exactly when a code does its job.

Promo codes in Foyer

  • Percent or fixed amount, on all services or chosen ones.
  • Applies to the priciest matching service by default, or the whole visit if you choose.
  • First-time clients only, checked against your Square customer list.
  • Expiry dates and use limits, claimed safely so a code with 10 uses can’t be used 11 times.
  • Links that carry the code. Share a link with the code built in for email, Instagram or Google ads.

A referral program for Square Appointments

Square’s own referral program pays you for referring other businesses to Square. For client referrals, Foyer adds a program that runs itself:

  1. Every client gets a code. After booking, each client gets their own code and a share card.
  2. Friends save on their first visit. $25 by default, anything from $1 to $500. A friend code works once per email.
  3. You reward the referrer after the visit. The reward goes out two hours after the friend’s appointment, and only if it wasn’t canceled.

Rewards are capped at 10 a year per client, and reward codes last a year. Most salons start with $25 each way: low enough to be safe, high enough to talk about.

Questions Square sellers ask

Can clients use a promo code on Square Appointments?

Not when booking online. Square’s booking site has no promo code field; Square coupons and discounts are applied by the business at checkout. Foyer adds a promo code field to online booking.

How do I create a discount code in Square?

Square lets you create coupons to share across marketing channels, and discounts your team applies at checkout. They are redeemed at checkout, not during online booking.

Does Square have a customer referral program for appointments?

Square’s referral program rewards businesses for referring other businesses to Square. For client-to-client referrals on bookings, businesses use an add-on such as Foyer.

How much should a salon referral reward be?

Most salons and med spas start with $20 to $25 for both the friend and the referrer, paid only after the friend’s first visit. That keeps the cost tied to real new clients.

Can a promo code be limited to new clients?

In Foyer, yes. A first-visit-only code is checked against your Square customer list, so existing clients can’t use it.
